About

Frog Cottage is a quintessentially beautiful Devon cottage located in a small hamlet called Combeinteignhead in the rolling South Devon hills with rendered elevations beneath a Devon thatch with high chimney stacks and leaded-light windows.

Built in the mid 17th Century and possibly a remodelling of an even earlier house Frog Cottage is built of whitewash plastered cob and stone rubble with a plain ridge thatched roof, half-hipped at ends, 2 projecting rear lateral chimney stacks, and a projecting left end stack with bread oven bulge. Inside carpentry from the 17th Century is exposed with a plank and muntin screen providing the break between the living room and the kitchen hallway. Throughout the cottage scratch moulded joists and chamfered scroll-stopped cross beams can be seen as well as the original open fireplace with a chamfered stopped intel and red sandstone jambs.

During the 18th Century the cottage was used as 2 houses but later in the 19th Century became 1 again and called Tarr’s Cottage. Later that century the name changed to Sally’s Cottage, probably named after the local Thatcher William Cumming who died in 1890. The name Frog Cottage was given in in the second half of the 20th Century.

The dog friendly Frog Cottage fronts the main street through the village and makes an important contribution to the conservation area.

The small hamlet of Combeinteignhead is the ideal location for exploring the South West. 3 miles to the beaches of South Devon to the east, half a mile to the Teign Estuary to the north, 20 minutes to Dartmoor, 20 minutes to Exeter and 35 minutes to Plymouth. Whether it is beautiful walks, fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, eating scones in Dartmouth (jam applied before the cream please), watching the sailing boats in Salcombe, or getting lost on Dartmoor, Combeinteignhead is a great location to start each day and with an award winning 17th Century pub called the Wild Goose 50 metres from the front door and another the Coombe Cellars (once used by smugglers) half a mile away there really isn’t a better place to finish the day!

Very much dog friendly! 🐶
